Port Orchard A Serene Seaside Community

Port Orchard A Serene Seaside Community

Port Orchard is an antique lover’s dream and beautiful seaside community. The adorable downtown area is lined with one of a kind shops and locally owned restaurants. It is located 13 miles west of West Seattle and connected to Seattle and Vashon Island via the Washington State Ferries. Port Orchard is encapsulated with serene views of the Puget Sound and this is one of the many reasons that draw people to call Port Orchard home.

The location of Port Orchard offers itself to an abundance of outdoor activities. Because it is a waterfront city it is convenient for crabbing season and fishing for fresh salmon.  An easy drive west leads you to the beautiful Olympic Mountains and Olympic National Park.  Just an hour further and you get to enjoy the gorgeous Pacific Ocean. To the east of Port Orchard is the Cascade Mountain range, with ski resorts to be enjoyed.

Next weekend marks the 125th year anniversary for the City of Port Orchard. In honor of this anniversary, on Saturday, September 5th, the City of Port Orchard is hosting a celebration in downtown Port Orchard. (http://www.cityofportorchard.us/docs/city_clerk/Community%20Events/po125.pdf)

Kitsap Peninsula has thousands of acres of forested lands, open space, wildlife and birding habitat to be enjoyed all year round. There are several parks to be enjoyed in Port Orchard, including Blake Island State Park, which features a 475-acre marine camping park with five miles of saltwater beach shoreline.  This park offers amazing views of both the Seattle skyline and the majestic Olympic Mountains. Because the park is an island, visitors can only access it by tour boat or private boat.  Other activities visitors can enjoy while visiting Blake Island State Park are picnicking, fire circles for both small and large groups, bar-b-que grills, 7.5 miles of bike and hiking trails, boating, clamming, crabbing, diving, salt water-fishing, volleyball, and horseshoe pits. Manchester State Park, which is also located in Port Orchard, is another large park that visitors do not need a boat to access, and offers 111 acres of activities.  The park has 3,400 feet of waterfront and 50 campsites. The park also features some hiking trails, bird watching, mountain biking, wild-life viewing, volleyball, boating, diving, and saltwater fishing. (http://www.parks.wa.gov/542/Manchester)

When you’re ready to go out to eat, Port Orchard’s Lighthouse restaurant is a local favorite. The restaurant features casual waterfront dining with a large deck and table’s right on the water. Of course there is also dining available inside and the restaurant is family friendly. Their menu features a variety of items from fresh seafood to local favorites, including Oyster po’boy sandwiches, clam chowder, fish n chips, German pretzel, and stone-fired pizzas and flat breads. If you’re in the mood for something a little more intimate and upscale, Bay Street Bistro prides themselves on offering their guests the freshest dining experience. The menu includes such appetizers as savory blue cheesecake with local honey and walnuts, spicy clams, and wild mushroom bruschetta to name a few.  Entrees include Julia’s Boeuf Bouguignon, a 14oz Ribeye steak, and Spaghetti Vongole. If you’re looking for a waterfront community that offers a quaint downtown area with cute specialty shops and dining, but is also close to many wonderful outdoor activities, Port Orchard may be the next place you call home.
